Sailing with FEKS

Very nice, Gnarlydog, thanks for the post. I am about to try a set of Flat Earth sails on my kayak and have a question. Do you recommend that I use shrouds positioned behind the line of the mast without any backstay or is it better to use shrouds in line with the mast and adding a backstay. Which performs better in your experience?

Waternut, I don't use the backstay as per FEKS instructions and prefer to have the only two stays anchored half way up the mast. The advantage is to have the sail lower and maybe more stable (less levarage from the wind). I have never tried mounting the sail with the short stays anchored below the boom but some say that it's better since it exerts less down pressure onto the deck and often there is no need to reinforce the kayak in that area. My concern is the mast bending in high winds if the stays are lower.
